Patella-Femoral Pain
Patella-femoral pain is an overuse condition affecting the knee cap (patella).  Although there may be many contributing factors, activities that require squatting, climbing stairs, and/or jumping often play a part in the development of this condition.  Patellafemoral pain is typically felt in the front of the knee and is often described as pain around or behind the knee cap.  Conservative treatment of patellafemoral pain includes a period of activity modification or rest, icing the affected area for 20 minutes, and light stretching of the thigh muscles.  Since there are so many different contributing causes of this condition, it is advisable to see a sports medicine specialist to conduct a thorough orthopedic evaluation to identify the cause of the problem.   If you are uncertain about the nature of your condition or your condition does not improve with conservative treatment please contact your primary care provider or for more specialized care contact Children’s Sports Medicine.
