Meniscal Injuries

The meniscus are two pieces of cartilage located in the knee joint that are responsible for cushioning and adding stability to the knee.  Meniscus injuries are most often caused by planting and twisting the knee and can occur in conjunction with a ligament tear.  Those suffering from a mensical injury may complain of pain that can be accompanied by swelling, clicking, locking, and/or giving way of the knee.  Depending on the severity of the injury, some injuries respond well to conservative treatment and rehabilitation while others may require surgical repair.  Initial treatment should include rest, icing the affected area for 20 minutes, and applying a compression wrap to control swelling.  If you think you might be suffering from a meniscal injury please contact your primary care provider or for more specialized care contact Children’s Sports Medicine.
