Research Training

Research education and training are vital to the mission of Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. As a top-ten free-standing pediatric research center and an academic affiliate of The Ohio State University, The Research Institute has an outstanding faculty, dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of scientists in pediatric research. Mentoring is so important to our institutional culture and goals, it is a key tactic in our 2005 to 2010 strategic plan.

Investigators at The Research Institute are teaching faculty in various Departments at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, including the Departments of Pediatrics, Pathology, Surgery, Otolaryngology and Psychiatry. As a result, a large number of students and trainees are based at The Research Institute, including undergraduates, residents and fellows in pediatrics and pediatric surgery, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. For example, in academic year 2006, 52 graduate students received training on our campus.  Instruction occurs in informal and formal didactic sessions, one-on-one interactions, and hands-on laboratory training.

Follow the links below to explore educational opportunities at The Research Institute:

Pediatric Faculty Training

The Department of  Pediatrics has held an NICHD Child Health Research Center Development Award  (CHRCDA K12) for training junior pediatric faculty since 1997.  This grant  provides awards for basic laboratory training of junior faculty members in the Department of Pediatrics. For more information, contact the Program Director, John Barnard, MD, or call 614.722.2880.

Pediatric Subspecialty Fellowship Training

The Department of Pediatrics has held a National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Training Grant for pediatricians since 2003. This grant establishes research training specifically for laboratory research and provides focused postdoctoral research training opportunities for pediatric physicians preparing for careers in pediatric research. For more information, contact the Program Director, John Barnard, MD, or call 614.722.2880.

National Student Awards

A dynamic reciprocity exists between students and teachers in the research setting.  The inquisitiveness and fresh perspective of the bright minds of medical students, graduate students, pediatric residents and post-doctoral fellows often provide illuminating insights into the complex problems of human biology and medicine.

Listed below are national awards and recognitions bestowed upon students, residents and fellows under the mentorship of The Research Institute faculty over the past three years.
